Key considerations for choosing the best off-road camper

When you’re choosing a caravan, there are a few things you should always consider. Knowing what to look for – and what questions to ask – can make a big difference in ensuring you select a van that aligns with your off-road plans. Here are the main considerations you should keep in mind.

Caravan construction

Perhaps most importantly, you need to think about your van’s construction. Consider the chassis of your camper. How sturdy is it as a foundation for your van, and is it up to the tasks you’ll be asking of it? Think about your van’s suspension and off-road capabilities. How well will your camper withstand harsh, dusty conditions when you set out on an adventure?

JAWA campers are designed, engineered, and built to tackle diverse Australian conditions with ease. All hydraulics, plumbing and electrical installations are carried out in our workshop to stringent Australian standards.

Camper van size

How big will your van need to be to comfortably accommodate you and the kind of van life you want to experience? If you’re mainly planning to take weekend trips, you can get away with a smaller van. If you’re doing The Big Lap, you might need some extra space.

Don’t forget to consider space considerations and towing requirements. More space can optimise comfort, but a bigger camper may be harder to tow or may require a larger towing vehicle. These things can influence the ease of your journey and the way you travel in your camper van, wherever the road takes you.

Sleeping arrangements

A comfy night’s sleep can make van life feel like a home away from home, so it’s important to think about the sleeping arrangements you require. How big are the beds, and how many are available? This will determine how many people can comfortably join in on your next getaway.

JAWA offers a range of sleeping configurations, with seriously comfy king-sized innerspring beds for adventuring couples, and bunk options for families.

Electrical and Water Supply

The electrical and water supply of a camper can make a huge difference to livability on the road. It can also determine how far off-road you can travel – and how long you can be self-sufficient while you’re there. Some vans include solar-powered energy systems and water systems with pumps and storage tanks.

JAWA campers are equipped with Enerdrive power products, solar panels, and Truma AquaGo Instantaneous Hot Water System.

Cooking facilities

Check out what your chosen van can offer in terms of cooking facilities and food preparation space. Will you have everything you need to prepare the food you like on the go, even if your adventure takes you to the middle of nowhere?

JAWA offers a range of kitchen facilities to suit your travelling style. Enjoy the convenience and comfort of internal cooking or embrace the outdoors with a spacious alfresco kitchen.

Bathroom Facilities

Bathroom facilities are often a contentious topic when it comes to caravan travel. Some vans include everything, from a toilet and sink to a functioning shower. Others are much more limited in terms of in-built hygiene features.

Think about how you like to travel and what’s important to you on the road. If the thought of using public toilets and showers gives you the horrors, then a camper with ensuite may be an investment you’re willing to make. At JAWA, we believe in showering without your thongs and using your own loo! Even our smallest camper comes with an internal shower and toilet because, well, you deserve it.

Storage

Storage is critical, especially if you have plans to be on the road for extended trips. What will you need to carry with you on your journey, and will your chosen van have space for it all without encroaching on all-important living space? By considering storage from the outset, you can ensure you always have room to carry the things you need. You’ll be able to store items securely, and you’ll never have to worry about leaving supplies behind.

JAWA campers are designed to maximise storage without compromising on living space. There is an art to packing the camper and our friendly team are always on hand to chat with you about how much storage you’ll need for the travel plans you’re making.

Heating, air-conditioning, and dust control

Heating, air conditioning, and dust control features can have a big impact on your overall caravanning experience. Consider the conditions you’ll be travelling in and determine the importance of each of these tools. If you’re travelling through the hot and dusty Outback, you’ll need quality air conditioning and dust control. If you’re hitting the road throughout the winter months, you don’t want to skimp on heating. Comfort is key to a good holiday!

JAWA campers come with quality inclusions like dust reduction systems, diesel heaters, and reverse cycle a/c to ensure your comfort. We’ve thought of everything so that you can camp with ease.
