1. Lake Eildon National Park

For those who love being on or near the water, Lake Eildon National Park is a standout.

This fabulous spot is a hotspot for boating, fishing, and relaxed lakeside camping. It’s perfect if you want to bring the boat or kayak, cast a line, or just enjoy a peaceful weekend by the water.

Why it’s great:

  • Massive lake with plenty of space to explore
  • Great for fishing, boating, and swimming
  • Home to significant and endangered wildlife species – look out for Barking or Powerful Owls or the Spotted Tree-frog

Facilities: Mix of unpowered bush camps and some areas with toilets, hot showers and basic amenities.

2. Cathedral Range State Park

If you’re after an adventurous escape, Cathedral Range State Park is hard to beat. Just under two hours from Melbourne, it’s a favourite for hikers, off-road campers, and anyone who enjoys a more rugged bush experience.

The campsites here are basic – think drop toilets and unpowered sites – but that’s part of the appeal. You’re surrounded by dramatic ridgelines, native bushland, and incredible walking tracks like the Razorback Trail.

Why it’s great:

  • Three campsites to choose from – Cooks Mill is ideal for hybrid caravans
  • Stunning mountain views and challenging hikes
  • Quiet, back-to-nature experience with wildlife and lyrebirds for company

Facilities: Unpowered campsites, basic amenities. Best suited for self-sufficient campers.

3. Phillip Island

If you’re camping with family or prefer a few creature comforts, Phillip Island offers a perfect balance. Just 90 minutes from the city, it’s known for its beaches, wildlife, and relaxed coastal vibe.

Caravan parks here are well-equipped, with powered sites, clean amenities, camp kitchens, and even playgrounds for the kids. You can spend your days swimming, surfing, or catching the famous Penguin Parade.

For beachside family fun, check out the NRMA Phillip Island Beachfront Holiday Park.

Why it’s great:

  • Easy access, family-friendly island break
  • Beautiful beaches and coastal walks – with cute penguins to watch
  • Plenty of facilities for an easy, comfortable stay

Facilities: Powered and unpowered sites, amenities blocks, BBQ areas, and cabins.

4. Mornington Peninsula National Park

Just a short drive from Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula National Park offers coastal exploration along excellent surf beaches. Think ocean views, coastal trails, and easy access to wineries and cafes.

It’s a great choice if you want nature during the day and the option to explore nearby towns in the afternoon or evening.

There are a number of great camping options in the area, but for beachfront chill, choose Capel Sounds Foreshores, open September to April for camping.

Why it’s great:

  • The Coastal Walk two-day walking track and many shorter options
  • Close to food, wine, and local attractions
  • Surf, rockpools and remnant bush where wildlife abounds

Facilities: Mix of powered and unpowered sites nearby, plus amenities, BBQ areas, and well-maintained campgrounds.

5. Grampians National Park

Right on the edge of the two-hour mark (depending on where you start), the Grampians National Park is absolutely worth the drive. This is one of Victoria’s most iconic natural landscapes, known for its incredible hiking, sandstone mountains, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife.

Camping options range from well-equipped caravan parks in nearby towns to more remote bush camps deeper in the park. It’s perfect for both beginners and experienced campers.

Why it’s great:

  • Incredible hiking, panoramic lookouts, and abundant wildlife
  • Relaxed vibes with local artists and wineries to visit
  • A true escape without going too far

Facilities: Caravan parks with powered sites nearby, plus very well-regarded unpowered bush camps and basic park facilities.

Choosing the right spot

When it comes to choosing a camping spot near Melbourne, the best spot really depends on your preferred travelling style.

If you’re set up for off-road adventures and happy to go off-grid, places like Cathedral Range or Lake Eildon offer raw, unplugged natural experiences. Caravan dealers in Melbourne can help you upgrade your set-up for this type of adventure.

If you prefer a bit more comfort and luxury side quests, powered sites, hot showers, and easy access, coastal spots like Phillip Island or the Mornington Peninsula are ideal.

Either way, you don’t need to travel far to find something special. Sometimes the best trips are the ones that are just down the road!
