On (And Off) The Road Long Weekend Road Trip: Perth to Wave Rock
Wave Rock is one of Western Australia’s most famous holiday destinations, based just 336 kilometres from Perth. Standing 15 metres high and 110 metres long, this spectacular natural rock formation takes the shape of a breaking wave, hence its name.
Wave Rock (Katter Kich in Nygunar) is linked to Indigenous Dreamtime stories and has important cultural significance to the local Ballardong people. Formed over the course of 2.63 billion years, this is a geological marvel not to be missed.
The best news? You can see this gem on a long weekend camping trip! Plan your itinerary ahead of time for a once-in-a-lifetime off-road getaway.
The Best Time to Travel
When should you make the trek out to Hyden to see Wave Rock?
This rock formation is a year-round attraction. However, if you want to admire the best of wildflower season on your journey, it’s a good idea to plan a spring trip. This is the perfect time of year to admire the true beauty of Western Australia while avoiding the worst of the searing summer heat.
If you want the best views (and photos), the best time to see Wave Rock in all its glory is right around sunset. The light shows off the different shades in the granite and gives you a chance to capture a stunning memory. Plus, you might get to see some of WA’s unique bird species soaring overhead before nightfall!
Perth to Wave Rock 3-Day Itinerary
Long weekend camping is the best so get ready to make the most of a 3-day long adventure! There are plenty of incredible places to stop along your way.
Day One: Perth to York
Less than 100 kilometres out of Perth, York is a great first stop. This is the state’s oldest inland town, located on the banks of the stunning Avon River. Take in the local history with a visit to town hall or admire the sights up at Mount Brown Lookout.
Overnight Accommodation: Try York Travellers Rest Caravan Park
Day Two: York to Hyden (Wave Rock)
As you make your way to Hyden – the home of Wave Rock – get excited about the wonders of a rock formation by stopping at Bruce Rock. Alternatively, take a hike through Kokerbin Rock. This spot offers sculptures, local museums, and even an incredible mosaic pathway to admire.
Next, in the heart of the Wheatbelt, stop by the Shire of Narembeen and learn about the rich history of farming and cattle raising. This is the outback at its finest and a great place to understand the country.
Now to Wave Rock! See what you came to see in Hyden, and don’t forget to also visit the many nearby Indigenous sites. Admire the sweeping landscape and learn from the locals along the journey.
