Blog Off-Road Hybrid Campers Have Changed a LOT. Old Rules Don’t Apply

So you’re searching for the perfect rig for camping adventures, but you’ve heard hybrid campers can’t compete with off road caravans. Well, hang on a minute! That’s old news – and it’s time to set the record straight.

Emerging in Australia in the early 2000s, hybrid campers were developed in response to the demand for off road campers that offered more comfort and protection than traditional camper trailers. Compared to full-size and pop top caravans, early off road hybrid campers often lacked interior space, insulation and amenities such as a built-in kitchen or a toilet and shower. However, advancements in design, materials and technology have seen today’s hybrids evolve into comfortable, capable and fully self-sufficient vehicles built for exploring even the remotest of locations.

So, it’s time to forget everything you think you know about off road hybrid campers and face the possibility that the perfect camper might have been hiding in plain sight all along! Let’s take a look at some common misconceptions and concerns and examine why they no longer apply to modern hybrids.

Myth 1: Hybrids are just a glorified camper trailer

JAWA off road hybrid campers and camper trailers may share some similarities – for example, they’re easier to tow than an old-school hardtop caravan – but we’d like to see a camper trailer with a king-sized bed and an indoor toilet!

Our hybrid campers are purpose-built vehicles engineered for durability and hardcore off-road performance. Built on a heavy-duty steel chassis, this robust structural design elevates JAWA hybrids far beyond soft-shell trailers, offering the toughness of an off-road tourer with the comforts and luxury amenities of a modern caravan.

Myth 2: Hybrids are a compromise in comfort and agility

Not as comfy as a caravan, not as agile to tow and manoeuvre as a camper trailer, why would you bother with a hybrid? That’s easy. The hybrid design takes the key features of both and blends them to create the Aussie camper of your dreams!

JAWA hybrid campers include:

  • creature comforts like a real bed, an internal ensuite, and, depending on the model you choose, an internal kitchen.
  • robust off-road capabilities and easier towing so you can explore remote locations that traditional caravans could never go.

Myth 3: Hybrids are too heavy for most tow vehicles

JAWA hybrids come in a range of sizes and tare weights, and it’s important to check your vehicle’s towing capacity before deciding on the right camper for you. However, our smaller hybrids, like the Stealth 12 and the Lowdown 13, can be towed by many standard dual-cab utes and SUVs.

A hybrid’s tare weight may be suitable for your tow vehicle, but it’s extremely easy to exceed the towing capacity if you overload the camper with gear. For safe towing, you’ll need to determine whether the camper’s loaded weight (the ATM) is within your vehicle’s towing capacity.

Myth 4: Hybrids are hard to set up

Yes, the old school hybrid design required some elbow grease to set up, but JAWA hybrid campers are designed to be practically effortless. Forget cranking up the pop top by hand! Push button roof actuators do all the work for you. Even the external kitchen slides out with minimal effort, so you can be cooking up a storm in minutes after a long day on the open road.

Myth 5: Hybrids are for solo travellers or couples

If you think hybrids are too small for family travel, think again. The JAWA range includes fully functional off-road hybrids built for family adventures. The Infinity 15 is fitted with two bunk beds for the kids AND a king-sized bed for the parents.

Myth 6: Hybrid outdoor kitchens are inconvenient

Internal kitchens have their appeal, but JAWA is all about outdoor living. Our hybrids feature alfresco kitchens designed to make preparing meals a breeze – and keep cooking smells from lingering inside your camper. We’ve kitted them out with a 4-burner gas cooktop, a stainless-steel sink, a slide-out prep bench with drawers, a large 95L Evacool fridge/freezer, and clever pantry storage. External kitchens also encourage you to embrace the great outdoors – and isn’t that what it’s all about?

Worried about inclement weather spoiling your dinner plans? JAWA hybrids come with a massive 4.5m waterproof roll-out awning as standard, which can be combined with a full-sized canvas annex and walls to create a large outdoor living room.

Myth 7: Hybrids have limited storage

Despite the hybrid camper’s compact size, the JAWA team have spent a lot of time designing efficient layouts with plenty of storage space. Every model in our range features internal wardrobes and cupboards as well as pantry space and pull-out drawers. Built for off-road readiness, they also feature external storage, including a custom front toolbox and slide-out BBQ/generator tray, so you have ample room for all the gear you need, even for long trips.

Myth 8: Hybrids are all overpriced

While the initial cost of a high-quality hybrid can be significant, it’s important to consider the true value of what you’re paying for.

JAWA off road hybrid campers come with:

  • a robust, high-quality build including hot-dipped galvanised chassis and underbody deadener
  • exceptional off-road capabilities, including high-performance Lovells suspension and Cruisemaster D035 offroad coupling
  • a superior electrical system that facilitates self-sufficient, off-grid adventures
  • luxury comforts, including innerspring mattress beds, ensuite with shower and toilet, heating, cooling, and instantaneous hot water
  • over $20k in quality brand-name products as standard.
