Blog Caravan Parks vs Off-Road Camping: What’s the Best Way to Travel with a JAWA?

Take your JAWA anywhere - caravan park vs offroad camping

When travelling around Australia, there is no single right way to spend the night. Some nights call for a powered site and easy access to local facilities, while others are better spent off the beaten track, surrounded by the Australian landscape.

Travelling with an off-road camper gives you the freedom to choose. You can stay in a caravan park, explore National Parks, head further off-grid or even pull up behind a country pub for the night.

Get ready to explore!

Why Stay in a Caravan Park?

Caravan parks are popular with Australian travellers and for good reason. They make life on the road easy!

With powered sites, showers, toilets, and, in some cases, swimming pools, playgrounds, and camp kitchens, caravan parks offer lots of amenities that add comfort and convenience to your travels. They’re often located near shops, restaurants and local attractions for those who like to go, see and do while camping. And of course, caravan parks are a fantastic place to meet new people, swap stories and pick up recommendations for places to explore along the way.

The convenience does come at a cost though. Depending on where you’re travelling, a powered site can add a significant expense to your trip. Stay for a few weeks, and those nightly fees can quickly eat into your travel budget. And of course, the communal atmosphere of the humble caravan park is part of the appeal for many, but it’s not for everyone.

Why Stay Off-Road for the Night?

An off-road camper opens up a whole new way to travel. Instead of planning each night around the nearest caravan park, you can plan your trip around the places you actually want to explore. That might mean waking up beside a remote beach, finding a quiet spot in the bush or setting up camp in parts of Australia that are simply out of reach for a conventional caravan.

Traditionally, one of the biggest challenges of camping somewhere without power has been having enough energy to run everything you need. But as JAWA Off Road owner and caravanning expert John says, this has changed significantly with the ongoing upgrades to power systems across the range.

“The solar and charging systems we have on board now can easily last you two to three days solid, in bad weather. You can even run your air conditioning and microwave.”

With Arizon lithium batteries and advanced Victron charging systems included as standard, JAWA Off Road campers provide off-grid power that lets you explore further and for longer.

Why Stay in a National Park?

Staying in a national park can offer a great blend of remoteness and convenience. Some national parks offer designated camping areas, firewood, toilets and even powered sites, but nestled within a magnificent natural landscape, you’ll feel a world away from the caravan park.

Fees, facilities and camping rules vary from one national park to another, so before you go, check availability and if off-road campers are permitted. Depending on the location, the facilities can be quite primitive (hello, drop toilets!) but when you’re in an JAWA kitted out with an ensuite, that won’t be a problem!

What About Country Pub Camping?

Across Australia, many country pubs welcome travellers to stay overnight on their property. There’s usually no camping fee, but you can support the business by popping in for a meal and a beverage or two. It’s a simple way to break up the journey, experience a little local hospitality and discover parts of Australia you might otherwise drive straight through. Some pubs also offer access to showers and toilets, but once again, that’s not an issue if you’re travelling with a JAWA.

Seasoned camper John says country pub camping has become really popular, as he and his wife Karen discovered on a recent trip to Port Douglas.

“Pub camping is great. Kaz found an app where you put in your destination, and it gives you four or five pubs you can stay at along the way. It’s great for the return trip when you might be a bit over it. We did two pub stays on the way back from Port Douglas. After a long day on the road, it was good to walk in and get a pub meal.”
