Plan Ahead
The key to travelling with kids is planning ahead and being prepared.
If you are camping, choose a campsite which has child-friendly activities on hand, such as its own playground, creek and large area for the kids to run around.
For safety reasons, try to avoid sites which have high traffic areas.
What to Pack
Along with the essential day-to-day items, try to pack things which you know your child can’t live without, or items you won’t be able to buy at the drop of a hat.
Here are some things that we suggest:
- Food, such as snacks, lollies, breakfast cereals, easy meals, noodles and marshmallows for the campfire.
- Drink bottles (and plenty of water).
- Activities – board games, cards, colouring in, toys and books.
- Sporting equipment – bikes, scooters, fishing gear and roller skates.
- Clothes – for a range of temperatures including swimmers and jumpers
- Sun protection – hat and sunscreen.
- Insect repellent.
- Any other necessary medication.
- Dummies and bottles for milk (depending on child’s age).
Other things which might come in handy include a kids table and chairs and plastic cutlery.
Other Advice
From our experience, if you want a bit of quiet time at the end of the day, we suggest you wear your kids out early. Take a bush walk or a swim in the ocean. Then mum and dad might be able to enjoy a quiet drink or two under the stars by the campfire.
