On (And Off) The Road The line-up: Our favourite Queensland summer campgrounds

There was a lot of debate when it came time to narrow down the list of our favourite local summer camping grounds. With so many amazing camping grounds in the south East Queensland region, it was near impossible to choose! But one thing these spots all have in common is they are perfectly suited to Summer camping escapes. They take you off the beaten track, cater for every type of camper, whether you do tents, campers or hybrid caravans, and offer a great spot to cool off in the Summer.

The Natural Bridge Retreat Camping

This private camping ground is right on the border of Queensland and New South Wales and offers stunning views of the Numinbah valley. Explore your way down the creek or just spend the day swimming in the picturesque main waterhole that is filled by a stunning waterfall. For those with a bit more energy, the property offers a short hike up to Fig tree plateau for some breath-taking views. Or for the more adventurous, tackle the short but steep and overgrown bushwalk up to the Bushranger Caves. It is well worth the hike!

Moreton Island National Park

If camping right on the beach is more your style, then you will love Moreton Island National Park. Choose from several coastal camping grounds dotted along the sandy stretches of Moreton Island, some of which require a 4WD, others which are accessible from the barge. There are towering sand dunes, creeks, crystal clear lagoons and miles of sandy beaches to enjoy. Try your hand at fishing for fresh squid off the beach. And don’t forget to pack your snorkeling gear and explore the Tangalooma ship wrecks.

Sundown National Park

For a more rugged camping adventure, head west to discover the Sundown National Park. This is very much a BYO everything camping location and suits those off-grid lovers to a tee. Whether you want to sleep under the stars, or relax in your hybrid camper, this remote stunning national park has lots of camping sites to choose from, most of which require a 4WD. There’s challenging bushwalks, creek kayaking, fishing holes, waterfalls and breathtaking gorges.

Cooloola Recreation Area, Great Sandy National Park

As the name of this national park suggests, there is seemingly endless sandy beaches to explore. Cooloola Recreation area is in the Fraser Coast Region and offers campers lots of options, both right on the beach or dotted along the beautiful Noosa River.

Park right on the beach and set up camp at Double Island Point. There are loads of walks, 4WD tracks and lakes to explore. Make sure you pack your snatch straps, as the beach track can catch you out. For those who love kayaking, the many Upper Noosa River campsites offer canoe landings, river views, fishing spots and shady paperbark and scribbly gum forests.
